Buying Firewood

Our guide to buying firewood

When buying firewood the most significant factors which affect the heat output and how they burn are:

  • The moisture content: and
  • The species of wood

Moisture Content

Dry firewood burns cleaner, warmer and better, whereas wet wood steams and smokes. When burning dry wood, it takes less energy to burn off residual moisture and therefore more energy converts to heat. All our firewood logs have a moisture content of below 25% and mostly below 20% to ensure that they provide a good heat to warm your home.

Because properly dried firewood burns almost entirely without smoke, it is much easier on your stove or fireplace as it does not leave nearly as many pollutants or deposits.

Hardwood v softwood

In terms of species hardwood logs due to their density will burn for longer, while softwood logs will burn fast and hot.

Softwood logs are ideal for starting a fire as they are easier to light than hardwood. They are great if you want to build a quick fire that warms your room quickly. Softwood logs are likely to produce large flames and they will crackle and spark.

Hardwood logs are best used to keep the fire going. They will burn for a lot longer but are a lot harder to get to light and are best added to a fire once you have it established. They will not produce as much of a flame as softwood logs.

Here at Lakes Wood Fuel, we suggest that you use a mix of firewood. Softwood, alongside kindling to get your fire going, and hardwood once your fire is established to give a steady burn. If your fire is looking a little dull, adding some softwood will freshen it up.

How much wood will I need?

How much wood you require is dependent on a number of factors including:

  • The size and efficiency of your stove or fire;
  • How often you use your stove or fire;
  • How you use your stove or fire; and
  • The amount of heat you want to generate.

We have however pulled together some packs, 1 week’s supply and 2 weeks supply, aimed at people looking for firewood to keep them cosy throughout their holiday. These quantities have been based on a standard wood-burning stove and average use, not a large stove on all-day. Due to every stove and everyone’s usage being different, while we cannot guarantee these packs offer the exact quantities for a week or two, we believe that they should fulfil most people’s requirements for the period of their stay.

Storing Firewood

Logs should be stored out of the weather. While exposure to a little bit of rain will make very little difference to the moisture content your logs, logs should not be exposed to extended rainfall or immersed in water.

Logs can be stored either inside or in a log store. Logs can also be stored outside provided they are stacked, covered and are kept off the ground.

Legislation

UK Government Legislation

In February 2020 the UK Government announced that it was banning the sale of house coal and wet wood from February 2021.

The firewood that we sell complies with this emerging legislation. All our wood has a moisture content of below 20%. Therefore it is classified as ‘dry wood’ and complies with the emerging regulations. It is suitable to burn on your fire or wood-burning stove.

Lakes Wood Fuel supports the move by the UK Government to restrict the sale and ultimately burning of wet wood. Wet wood is not only more polluting than dry wood, but it is also far less efficient to burn. Dry wood when burnt produces less smoke and pollution than wet wood. It is cheaper and more efficient to burn.

It is worth noting that despite some misleading media reports the UK Government are not banning the use of fires and/or wood-burning stoves. They are just introducing a ban on the most polluting types of fuel, wet wood and house coal. The announcement does not affect the products that we sell.

How can I place an order with Lakes Wood Fuel?

I'm not sure what to order?

I cannot find what I am looking for?

Paying for an order:

You can pay via credit or debit card when you place your order online using our secure payment service. Alternatively, you can pay via a BACS transaction. You will be asked to select how you wish to pay when you place your order.

If you wish to redeem a gift voucher please set this out in the notes section when you place your order, referring to the voucher reference number which can be found on the gift voucher.

Lakes Wood Fuel is a trading name of Edinburgh Wood Fuel Limited. Therefore, payment will be made to Edinburgh Wood Fuel Limited and it may be that Edinburgh Wood Fuel Limited appears on your bank statement.

I have not received confirmation of my order

Once you have placed your order you will receive an email confirmation of your order. If you do not receive confirmation of your order, please contact us via email info@lakes-woodfuel.co.uk or telephone 01900 85 119.

How much is delivery and what area does Lakes Wood Fuel cover?

Delivery is free within a 10-mile radius of our depo situated on the outskirts of Cockermouth, subject to a minimum order of 40.00. A £5 delivery charge will apply for orders less than £40 within the 10-mile radius.

We will deliver beyond 10 miles, but such deliveries will incur a delivery charge. Please see the delivery information section of the website for further details on these rates.

Delivery fees are calculated based on the delivery postcode you enter when placing your order.

We also offer a collection service. Please select ‘Collection’ at the checkout. When we have received your order and payment we will contact you to arrange a collection slot from Rose Barn, High Lorton, CA13 9UQ.

How long does it take to receive an order?

We aim to deliver orders within 3-7 days of orders being placed.

Deliveries will usually be made on a Wednesday or a Sunday.

We do offer a next day delivery service at a cost of £12 on top of the normal delivery fee.

Can I give delivery instructions?

If you have any specific delivery requirements please let us know when placing your order using the notes section, and we will try our best to accommodate your request. If we cannot meet your requirements, we will phone you to discuss alternative arrangements.

Does Lakes Wood Fuel delivery all year round?

Yes, you can order all year round.

I have received an order and I am not happy with it - what do I do?

In the rare event that you receive a product which does not match your expectations, we will be more than happy to refund or exchange them for you, providing they are returned in original packaging and within 21 days of delivery. Please contact us via email info@lakes-woodfuel.co.uk or telephone 01900 85 119 if you wish to discuss an exchange or refund.
